Paleontological Resources Specialist

Sapphos Environmental, Inc., an established environmental consulting firm with over 30 years of experience, is seeking a Paleontological Resources Specialist to join our team. We are committed to providing high-quality environmental compliance services to public- and private-sector clients.


This is a full-time, exempt position that combines technical expertise, project management, and business development responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare technical documentation, including Paleontological Resources Mitigation Plans and Paleontological Resources Technical Reports
  • Manage paleontological mitigation efforts, including macrofossil and microfossil salvage, sample collection and preparation, specimen identification and analysis, and recordkeeping
  • Conduct impact assessments in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Perform literature reviews and museum records searches to support project evaluations.
  • Provide professional recommendations to federal agencies and clients regarding the significance and treatment of paleontological resources
  • Oversee and conduct construction monitoring for paleontological resources
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal writing, budget preparation, scheduling, and client outreach
  • Participate in fieldwork assignments (including extended periods in remote areas of the western U.S.)

Required Technical Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of California geology and paleontology, with demonstrated field experience.
  • Must meet the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology’s 2010 criteria to qualify as a Principal Investigator/Project Paleontologist
  • Must meet requirements for approval as a Field Agent under Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Paleontological Resource Use permits
  • Proficiency in creating stratigraphic sections, interpreting geologic maps, and describing geologic formations, soils, and processes in detail
  • Ability to assess geological formations for paleontological sensitivity
  • Experience with data management and GIS applications
  • Physically able to hike long distances in variable weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
