Former Ray Vines Automobile Showroom
Long Beach Carwash and Automobile Retail Building
City of Long Beach
Los Angeles County, CA
Sapphos Environmental, Inc. conducted a historical resources assessment in support of the redevelopment of the former Ray Vines automobile showroom in Long Beach. The project entailed reuse of the glass-enclosed portion of the showroom, which displays the mid-20th-century style of architecture known as “Googie,” and new construction with retail space and a car wash. The historical resources assessment was requested by the City of Long Beach to determine if the project would impact historic resources. An intensive-level survey of the property to evaluate the historic significance of the property, including identifying its character-defining features, was conducted and an assessment of the project plans for potential impacts to character-defining features was made. Sapphos Environmental, Inc. received a prestigious Long Beach Preservation Award in 2016 for the historical resource assessment.
