Los Angeles County, CA
With over 900 school buildings, campuses, and centers, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second largest public school system in the United States, with a number of its buildings considered historic resources under CEQA. In advance of district-wide redevelopment, LAUSD contracted Sapphos Environmental, Inc. to provide historic resource consulting services to guide and inform master planning efforts and environmental review. In January 2014, Sapphos Environmental, Inc. prepared the Historic Context Statement (HCS) in accordance with the National Register Multiple Property Documentation approach. Surveys of 55 campuses then drew upon the HCS, which defined and described significant eras, architectural character, property types, character-defining features, and eligibility standards for significant school plants and buildings.
